DIY Metal Stamped Washers

You might be reading this from the comfort of your air conditioned homes. However, I am currently hiking through the heat and dying for a shower. I like to camp and hike, but I also like to be clean. So being a Ma on Pioneer Trek and not showering for a couple days is rough for me. Anyway, I digress.
While on Trek we needed to prepare 2-3 devotionals. We wanted to give our “kids” a handout with one of them, so I made these metal stamped washers. Keep reading for how to make your own and what materials you’ll need.

It was my first experience with metal stamping and there was more of a learning curve then I expected, but I had a lot of fun! The washers are just regular Zinc washers, which you can order online or pick up from your local hardware store.

All you have to do is line your individual letters or numbers up, and then strike them with a hammer. I used a smaller and lighter crafting hammer. You’ll want to do it on a firm surface with a soft cloth over it so you don’t scratch anything. Then I took black permanent marker and filled in the lines, but you don’t have to do that. You can clean up any stray black marks with a baby wipe.

I liked the idea of doing a scripture verse because I thought they could wear them on Pioneer Trek if they wanted. Then, afterwards they could put them on their keychains or they could just keep them in their wallets with their change. When I make things for other people, I try to think of what I would like and what practical purpose they’ll have.

“Now this was the faith of these of whom I have spoken; they are young, and their minds are firm, and they do put their trust in God continually.”

Alma 57:27

The verse is from the Book of Mormon, – I thought it went well with the theme of our trek, “Faithful and True We Will Ever Stand”.
