bbw: Tangled tower cake

Table of Contents

This is one of those times when I’m going to be keeping it real on the blog. This cake did not turn out exactly as planned, but I learned a lot as I was going along and next time I make a tower cake I think the outcome will be much better. 🙂
So for my daughter’s birthday I had an idea to make a Rapunzel tower cake and I figured since I was going the super simple route with big brother’s cake, I’d have time to make this no problem. And really, once we worked out some of the kinks it went pretty smoothly; but a first time trial and error combined with HOT weather and melting buttercream made for an interesting experience!
First I baked two cake mixes in one large sheet pan; I went with chocolate and strawberry.

Once the cake was cooked and cooled I cut out several rounds just using a glass bowl as my cookie cutter.

Once a few layers were stacked on top of a Styrofoam base, I inserted a wooden dowel to help support it. Then I continued with the stacking till I had the height I wanted.

I did a crumb coat layer, then stuck the whole thing in the freezer before doing the final frosting layer. The spire on top is a ice cream cone covered with frosting. I also piped some grass on the base and my mom had the brilliant idea to pipe some up the tower to look like vines. it looked really cool but unfortunately I ran out of icing.

Ultimately, all the mattered is that the birthday girl liked it and I learned as I went. Like I said, the next tower cake will probably turn out much better. 🙂
