For awhile now I have had an idea floating around in my head for some garden stakes. Admittedly, that might seem strange since we’re living in a small apartment. We don’t even have a yard but what we do have is a large patio. Somehow I convinced my husband to make us a raised planter bed for that patio and I love the idea of having it full of flowers and vegetables. I decided rather than buy gardening stakes to label all my seedlings, I would make some DIY garden stakes instead!
DIY garden stakes
These DIY garden stakes are really quite simple and inexpensive to make. Best of all, you don’t need any tools and can stick them together with some wood glue. That makes these the perfect quick naptime craft or project to have your little ones help you with.

materials needed:
- short wood stakes or popsicle sticks
- small wood plaques
- wood glue
- paint or stain
- chalkboard paint to write on (optional)
First I stained the wood with some leftover stain I had. Then I painted over them with some leftover green and sanded them down lightly since I knew I wanted a weathered look. I get a weird thrill out of using my leftover materials, don’t you? Next, I painted a rectangle of chalkboard paint in the center and attached the plaques to little stakes and that’s it! Garden stakes!
I made four but so far I only have a use for two of them. So far all I have growing this year is a plumeria and some chives that we planted with our Cub Scouts. Le sigh. Oh well, someday I’m sure I’ll have the garden I’ve been dreaming of!
