Who doesn’t love Chick-fil-A? Our family used to love when they hosted their Cow Appreciation Day every year. Unfortunately, they haven’t held this delicious day since pre-2020, but that was what this blog post was originally written for. Even though there’s no reason to dress like a cow every year, this easy cow costume is simple DIY to pull off for a inexpensive family costume! Originally posted in 2012, I updated this post in January 2025. Most pictures were taken in 2017, once our herd had grown quite a bit.

how to make an easy cow costume

2011 was my first year making a cow costume for my son. Living in the land of Texas and Chick-fil-A meant that our family needed to go all out for Cow Appreciation Day. His little onesie with the felt cow tail attached was so cute!

Well, my little dove has grown a bit since last year. Plus, we’ve added our little Miss to our herd since then. With Cow Appreciation Day 2012 fast approaching, I had to make an updated easy cow costume for him and new one for her, asap.

I still had a ton of black felt leftover from last year, and I already had plain white t-shirts for both of the kiddos. That means there was no cost associated with the easy cow costumes I needed to make this year! I just cut out some cow-looking spots and then sewed them onto the kid’s shirts. My little dove wore his shirt with a pair of black pants. Meanwhile, I paired the shirt for little miss with a white diaper cover and a tail made of yarn that I just pinned on. You can also use heat transfer for the cow spots, which makes this easy cow costume no-sew and I talk about in this blog post.

Don’t you think this would make a great last minute family costume?
