Welcome to the third installment of birthday bash week. With my two oldest kiddos having birthdays one day apart, this is the week each year on the blog where I focus on birthday fun! To start off this year’s festivities, I’m going to share some details from their birthday party. This year my son turns three and my daughter hit her big first birthday milestone. A fun yet simple cowboy and cowgirl birthday party seemed like the perfect theme for them.
details of a cowboy and cowgirl birthday party
I love how the details of this party came together. There were many hours in the weeks leading up to the party spent in online searches of the perfect activities and favors. Sometimes it can be hard to achieve that balance between special and extravagant. However, I think I really did a good job of planning a simple cowboy and cowgirl birthday party that the kiddos all loved.

party food kids will love
For the party food we went with a kid-friendly western theme. We had chicken chili, little smokies (lil’ doggies), watermelon on sticks, and cool ranch Doritos. We also had pre-filled cups with trail mix, ranch dip carrots, and peanut butter and celery. For drinks we had water, lemonade, and diet root beer. For dessert we had homemade mini cupcakes–Devil’s Food and Funfetti. A Kraft paper runner on the table allowed me to label all the food easily and stick with the rustic theme.

I decided on a fill-your-own station for the party favors. For edible favors I set out different baskets and jars of tootsie rolls, mini moon pies, yogurt covered raisins, and licorice. We also had mini plastic cowboys, Indians, and horses to keep with the party theme. In addition to favor bags, I had made inexpensive hobby horses for each guest. These were actually really easy and just use wood dowels, cheap socks, yarn, and batting. It was so fun to watch the guests “ride” around on them! I wish I could link to the tutorial, but unfortunately it looks like that blogger no longer has a live website.

fun and simple party activities
One of the reasons I had decided on this party theme was because I thought it would be easy to have outdoors. However, it ended up being a pretty hot day so we ended up spending more time inside than outside. This meant that many party guests were crammed into our small house for a majority of the time. Even so, I’m pretty pleased with how everything turned out. All the little cowpokes (more than a dozen) seemed to have a good time with the simple, loosely “themed” party activities we had.

For the cowboy and cowgirl birthday party activities activities I set up different stations. First of all, we had a “train depot.” This was a train table and mega blocks to play with and build a town. We also had a “jail”, which was just a small plastic jungle gym and a coloring table set up for them to color their own Wanted posters. You can grab that free printable below! Lastly, we had “gold panning” in their water table. For this station I had spray painted rocks gold and then added them with regular small pebbles and dirt in their water table. For inexpensive gold pans you just pound holes into cheap pie tins!
Would your kids enjoy this western cowboy and cowgirl themed party? What elements would you add?
