Who says a popcorn garland is just for trimming Christmas trees? The other day I spent some time with my two older kids while the two younger ones were sleeping doing some baking and crafting. I must admit that I don’t often bake or craft with my kids because it’s so much extra work and I’m usually in grumpy mom mode and don’t want to take the extra time to have them “help” me. My kids and I had so much fun with this cute Valentine’s Day popcorn garland and it is a great teaching moment too, because you’re spending time crafting together and they don’t even realize that they’re learning!

I already had popcorn and thread, so the only other thing to pick up are pom poms or felt balls. Either can be easily picked up from your local craft store, dollar store, or ordered from Amazon. I recommend popcorn without butter, much less messy and whiter in color. In fact, my kids and I had some fun popping whole kernels on the stove and watching them explode through the glass lid! However, I’ve also done this project before with microwave popcorn so either way will work.

Then it’s as simple as deciding on a pattern. I had my kids help me decide on what pattern we wanted to do. I put one kid in charge of handing me popcorn, and one in charge of handing me the felt balls. It was such a great activity to do together and barely cost anything! Plus, I still have plenty of felt balls leftover for future projects!

What a fun idea! My son wanted to make a popcorn garland at Christmas but we never go around to it — I wouldn't have thought to do it at Valentines. Great idea!

I love this idea! I think I'm going to do popcorn necklaces for Avery to watch Kung Fu Panda when it comes out!

This is an adorable DIY project that my kid would love to do for Valentines day, but I love that they really could work for any holiday if you just switch up the colors!
