In honor of my sweetheart’s birthday tomorrow, I have a special little #flashbackfriday post for you!
Let me set the scene for you. The year is 2012 and my husband’s big 30th birthday is quickly approaching. My goal every year is to make his birthday as special as possible because he is very much the type of person who says that his birthday is “just like any other day”, ugh. Perhaps he should have married someone who doesn’t care about such things then.
So anyway, 2012 and trying to plan something special for the hubby’s big day. But, oh yeah, I’m also in my third trimester and due just a month after his birthday… and it should be noted that my last baby had come two weeks early. So in reality, his birthday might be just two weeks from when I deliver our sweet baby #2, and my doctor has us convinced that this baby will come even sooner than out last one (spoiler alert–this was not the case).
So to sum up, I needed to plan something special but keep in mind that my options are somewhat limited because–(a) I’m super big and pregnant, and (b) we live thousands of miles away from family and don’t really have many friends we can ask to watch our two year old son. Therefore, I needed something that would be enjoyable not just for us adults but for a toddler, and something that was close by, or at least near one of my in-network hospitals, just in case.
I started searching for somewhere we could have a little “staycation” and I came across Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch. Located on the west side of San Antonio between the inner and the outer loops (For you non-Texans, many cities have their freeways laid out like a wagon wheel, making circles around the city and having spokes of other, smaller highways or freeways that connect the loops–best city planning ever.), it was less than 10 minutes from our home, and practically across the street from my hospital! That’s a check on the whole close and convenient requirement, but what about fun for all of us?
It definitely fit the bill there too, as Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch offers lots of planned activities, golf, fitness, and boasts a kid’s club; but what I was most excited about was definitely the fun water activities! There is an indoor and outdoor pool, hot tubs, water slides, and a lazy river! We had a blast while we were there and wore ourselves out.
Another fun thing we were able to do while there was roast s’mores in their big, outdoor fire pits. We brought our own goodies for making them, but if you forget you can pick up everything you need at their little convenience store on-site. Wild Oak Ranch also offers a few restaurant choices, but we opted to bring our own food and prepare it in our full kitchen that we had in our one-bedroom suite.
Hyatt Wild Oak ranch offered a great choice for a staycation for us, and we would love to stay again next time we visit San Antonio. It would serve as a great home base for visits to downtown San Antonio and the Riverwalk, Sea World, Six Flags, Schlitterbahn, and day trips to Fredericksburg or Austin.
Have you ever had a “staycation”? What was your experience?

You did great. I am a the same way, “Oh you don’t care about your birthday?…. Well I do and I’m going to make it awesome” haha
Haha, what is with guys? Hello, your birthday is one of the most awesome days of the year. I swear, one of these years I’m not going to do ANYTHING and then we’ll see how he REALLY feels about it. 😉
