We are in the midst of crazy birthday season in our household. My husband and two kiddos all have their special days within 15 days of each other. The combined party for Thing 1 and Thing 2 was this past Friday evening. We don’t throw a big friend party for our kids every year, so I had been looking forward to it. And out kids are getting old enough where they get excited about parties, so they had been looking forward to it. The little details of a party are the things I love working on. Keep reading for the cute and functional wood dessert stands he made me that was perfect for their combined birthday party!
how to make wood dessert stands
My dad had recently cut down a couple of trees in their front yard. There were several branches stacked up near their wood pile ready to be cut. When I saw them I knew that they would be perfect for some wood dessert stands I’d been wanting to make. I knew it would be way cheaper than purchasing some of the ones I’d seen at the store!
My father was kind enough to cut a few rounds for me of some of the wider pieces of trunk, and also a couple short lengths of skinnier branches so I could make some tiered servers as well.

After the rounds had been cut we let them sit out for several days. This way the excess sap could seep out. I sanded the tops of the wood rounds with course, 80 grit sandpaper to get them smooth. Then I picked the two rounds out that I wanted to make my tiered servers. I made each of the two a different way and the second way was easier and worked much better.
making a tiered wooden dessert stand
The first time making a tiered stand I tried to pre-drill my screw hole all the way through the wood round and the branch. That did not work very well because it was really hard to eye-ball the middle. The second time around I pre-drilled a hole in the middle of the branch stand. Then I pre-drilled a hole in the middle of the wood round, and then lined them up to screw them together and in place.

I countersunk the screw heads so they wouldn’t be flush with the level of the wood. On one of the rounds I filled the hole in with would putty, then sanded it down. On the other stand I just left it alone so the screw head is still exposed. Honestly, you can’t tell once you have something sitting on the stand anyway so I don’t think it matters. I really love the way they turned out!
