We are officially a week into spring and some of you might be in full-blown garden planning mode. The weather here seems a little undecided at the moment. However, I know it’s only a matter of time before I’m out in the yard mowing grass and picking fresh fruits and veggies with the kiddos. I love our big garden space on our property! Today I’m sharing a tutorial for a DIY garden teepee that’s both fun and functional!
what is a garden teepee?
Garden teepees are something that I remember doing when I was growing up. So, it was a neat experience being out in the garden with my parents and my children, having three generations make one together. This is a really great project to do with your kids to help them be more involved and excited about taking part in the gardening!
Materials needed:
- 6-9 wooden dowels or bamboo poles
- Wire or jute
- String
- Seeds (pole beans, morning glories, or sweet peas work great for this)
Steps:
- Start by placing your wooden supports into the ground, forming a pyramid shape. Be sure to place them close enough together that the plants will have enough support, but leave a slightly larger space where you want your opening to be.
- Secure them at the top where they join together with wire or jute.
- Thread string horizontally across the wooden supports, wrapping the thread around each support as you go along. Tie off at the end.
- Plant your seeds near the base of each wooden support.
- As your plants grow they should naturally climb along the teepee structure with minimal guidance needed from you.
- Enjoy your teepee and take lots of cute photos of your littles in it, you’ve earned it!
It’s crazy to me to think that these pictures are from last summer, time flies so quickly and this little girl is getting so big! Speaking of time flying quickly, I really need to get a move on and get working in the yard and garden because Summer will be here before we know it! If only the weather would cooperate so I could get something done, fingers crossed.

I am not a gardening person at all but this looks great!
What a fun project that can be used and enjoyed for years to come! Especially with teepees being so in right now. How cool for the littles to be able to have one in their playroom AND outside!
How fun! Love this, haven’t seen this before, although I have a black thumb, so probably a good thing I haven’t tried it yet, hehe.
how cute is this?!! No room in our tiny backyard here, but I’ll keep it in mind when/if we move back to our oversized Georgia yard 🙂
This will be such a pretty piece once it grows and matures a bit more.
I’ve never tried this but it looks so cool! I’m not much of a gardener either.
This is such a cute idea! I can’t wait to see it when all fills in. xo ~ Megan
This is so cute! I’ve never heard of a garden teepee but I love the idea. We are trying to plant our peas this week in our new raised garden boxes (yay!) but the weather has prevented us and it’s a muddy mess out there.
Gardening connects us to nature and that is the true essence of the human. I also love doing gardening and growing different vegetables and flowers in it. It gives me true happiness. By the way, your daughter is really cute.
This looks so fun! We are renting right now, so our garden is mostly in containers since we share a yard with our neighbors. I would love to do this in the future, though!
Wow! This looks so pretty!! I’ve always wondered how people do this. Maybe I will give this a try this year?!
This is so adorable! I would love to do this in our yard! We have some ivy we have been trying to grow up a gate, but I will have to try this!
What a fun project! Looks awesome!
We live in apartment, but my mom used Earth Boxes (google it) for easy gardening and instead of the tee pee, she used her old umbrella type clothes dryer. Much downsized from the huge garden my family had when I was growing up.
This is such a fun idea!! And that cutie seems to enjoy it too!
