Memorial Day weekend is upon us here in the states and that means the unofficial start of summer! Who is going to be braving the heat the next few months to take their family to a fair near them? Whether you’re visiting a small county fair, or your home state fair, it’s a summer staple. Let’s talk about some of the ways that you can make the most visiting the fair this year. This post is in collaboration with the Sacramento County Fair, all opinions are my own.
tips for visiting the fair
keep cool
When you’re outside this summer temperatures are probably going to be high. Consider visiting the fair in the morning or early evening, especially if you have little ones. Make sure that you’re staying hydrated and that you’re dressed accordingly. Sunscreen is a must and remember eye protection too. If you need to cool off then take advantage of some of the great indoor exhibits that your local fair probably offers.
This year at the Sacramento County Fair building D will offer the Shopper’s Expo, and building C will not only have local artisans displaying their talents and doing demonstrations, but that is also where the Mommy Lounge will be for any nursing mothers who need to nurse in comfort and cool.
know before you go
Look up times, directions, prices, and special deal days before you visit. You should be able to find all of this info on the website for your local fair.
For example, at the Sacramento County Fair kids age 12 and under are free every day, so that’s a great value! They also will be having a Military Appreciation Day on Memorial Day and they’re also hosting free school tours for Sacramento County school children on Thursday and Friday.

plan out your day
Are there certain things that you want to make sure you see? Are your kids all about seeing the animals? Does grandma love seeing the exhibits? Does your spouse want to participate in the pie eating contest? Check the fair’s website for a schedule of events.
This year at the Sacramento County Fair on Friday and Saturday they’re having a truly unique event called ‘Lil Monster Trucks where the drivers are all aged 6-17 years old, how fun is that? All these young drivers make up a small-scale monster truck team and I know that I wouldn’t want to miss seeing them if I were going with my kids!
try something new
One of the most fun things about the fair is trying something new. Whether it’s a food item a ride or a carnival game, you go to the fair to experience it, so experience it to the fullest!
This year Brass Ring Amusements is returning to the midway for the 27th year and they are bringing over 30 rides and attractions with them. Along with some classic favorites a brand new ride called Run Away Stagecoach. My favorite attraction is always the fun house, but this year I think I’m going to try something new!
