Today is a day that all of my kiddos have been waiting for for awhile–the day that Disney•Pixar’s Cars 3 comes out in theaters! Our whole family are big fans of the Disney•Pixar’s Cars franchise. From the movies to the rides to toys we just can’t get enough! Speaking of toys, I can’t wait to show you the fun LEGOs that my little ones got and what we did with them! But first–how about I show you the amazing outdoor car track we made in our own backyard? This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. Disney•Pixar’s Cars 3

We have plans to see Disney•Pixar’s Cars 3 in a couple of weeks. Until then I wanted to do something special for my little ones to help get them even more excited for the release! They have been obsessed with building tracks all over the house. They love driving their cars and trains on these tracks. But with summer here I’ve been wanting them to play outside more. It was finally time to work on something that’s been on my to-do list for awhile–an outdoor car track!

To get started with the good times on our track I had the perfect toy from Amazon. The LEGO Juniors Thunder Hollow Crazy 8 Race Building Kit. This LEGO kit was perfect for my family because it includes four different cars from the film. I also like that the LEGO Juniors sets are ideal for my little ones. They’re geared towards ages 4-7, so my seven year old is able to help his younger sisters.

how to make an outdoor car track

I had originally thought that this project would be something that I could take on myself. I even thought I’d have it done in half a day. However, I quickly realized that I needed help from my whole crew if I was going to pull this off! This outdoor car track turned out to be a family activity–and I couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help. My kids are so proud of the work that they put into their outdoor track and they love playing with it together!

constructing your own outdoor track

I started with a clear and level space under our cherry tree in our back yard. My three older kids helped pull all the weeds from the area. Then I got to work planning out and digging a track. My dad helped dig out the last bits of track and then lent his expertise about all things concrete. Placing steel rebar before pouring the cement should help ensure that our track stays in place and crack-free for years to come. So, hopefully our kids can continue to have friendly racing competitions for awhile still. You also want to make sure that the track you’re making is at least 3-4 inches deep and 4-6 inches wide. This will also help to keep the concrete in good condition.

a project that’s worth the wait

I would say the longest part of this project is definitely all the preparation and digging out the track. However, when you’re doing the cement work you also need to be meticulous. I’m so glad that I had my husband and father working on that part for me. It’s always good to learn from someone more skilled in an area than you are and the work goes faster when you’re working together!

My kids had to practice patience as we were working on this project but once the cement had hardened all that was left was to dress up our track a little bit. I added some river rock and succulents that I’m hoping will do really well in that area.

When it was finally time to open up our  LEGO Juniors Thunder Hollow Crazy 8 Race Building Kit the kids were thrilled! They had so much fun opening up the box and examining its contents. I love that there were so many different pieces for them to build so they could each build their own. It’s also great that it came with easy instructions. That way my oldest was able to help his younger sisters. I ask you–is there anything sweeter than seeing your child lovingly help a sibling?

Would your kids love this outdoor car track for their toys?

What a darling idea! We’ve done tracks with chalk before but I love this idea! It’s always fun to play in the dirt. Now you’ve got me thinking of where I could do something like this. So fun!

This is so cute Justine! We don’t have a space like this at our house since our trees are only about 5 years old. But if we ever get to that point or move to a place with good trees, this would be a perfect addition! Pinning!

You are too cool! I’d be like “here’s some Legos, play on the patio.” Lighting McQueen would be proud!

Can you possibly provide the instructions on how much cement and how to put down the rebarb etc?
