I love making hand painted wood signs. Combine that with my love of literary quotes and you get this great black and white sign. I’ve always liked Alice in Wonderland, in fact it’s the theme in my girls’ room. There’s so many good quotes in those books, and one particular that I’ve always loved. I knew this hand painted wood sign would be the perfect addition to my daughter’s room!

I make my wooden signs with cheap plywood and some simple trim for the frames. The plywood gets a light sanding and then base coat of color. I wanted to keep this wooden hand painted sign black and white–like the pages of a book.

I use my Silhouette machine to cut put my letters, but if you don’t have a die cutting machine there are alternatives. You can freehand the words, or purchase stickers from a craft shop. There are even Etsy shops that will sell vinyl quotes so you don’t have to cut them out yourself.
When you’re using vinyl to make a sign, don’t forget the transfer tape! It makes it so much easier to ensure everything is lined up correctly. Then, one of my favorite parts of making any sign is the distressing once it’s all dry. I love seeing the wood grain come through, I think it gives the finished project so much character! Once all the painting is finished, it’s important to paint over a layer of Mod-Podge to seal it. You can find a more detailed tutorial for my stenciling technique in this post.
