I say it very year but I can’t believe that Christmas is less than two weeks away! It just blows my mind how quickly it sneaks up every year. Luckily, if you want to get a little crafty there’s still plenty of time to and today I’m sharing an ornament tutorial that would make a fun gift or a great addition to your own tree. This DIY embroidery hoop map ornament is simple and sentimental.

why make a map ornament?

I love any craft that’s simple and these embroidery hoop map ornaments fit the bill. Plus, you can get really sentimental and fill your tree with places that are meaningful to your family. You could pick vacation spots, or hometowns, or anything you can think of. I personally love using maps in décor because it’s a great way to personalize things!

materials needed:
  • a road map (if you’re a AAA member you can pick one up for free from one of their locations, or you could print one up at home too)
  • small embroidery hoop
  • school glue
  • pencil and scissors (you’ll see an X-Acto knife in the pictures but I didn’t end up using it)
  1. Using the hoop as a stencil, trace around the area you want cut out, btu be sure to leave excess map for wrapping around the rim of the hoop.
  2. Glue a thin line around the inner rim of the hoop and place on the backside of the map (the opposite side you want showing).
  3. Cut small snips all around the sides of the map and fold up, again using small dabs of glue to secure to the sides of the small hoop.
  4. Place the outer section of hoop around the inner section and secure. Trim off any excess map that’s sticking out the back.
  5. Hang with twine or an ornament hook.
