Believe it or not it’s nearly December and the year is almost over. I feel like an interesting phenomenon happens the older that you get at this time of year. Rather than counting down the days in excited anticipation, we find ourselves wondering how time is passing so quickly. No? Just me? To help count down the days until Christmas and keep the focus on the reason for the season, here’s a free Nativity Advent!
waiting for Christmas…
Growing up the wait for the Christmas season would seem like an eternity. Just trying to survive the “long” stretch of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve would be almost unbearable. Sure, there were plenty of fun and festive ways to pass the time, but that time we were passing still seemed incredibly slow. When I was younger my parents would buy me a chocolate Advent calendar every year. I would look forward to that sweet tradition for months beforehand. I loved those Advent calendars, and since I can’t send all of you a chocolate Advent calendar and I’m trying to keep our Christmas Christ-centered, I have a different type of Advent for you today.
what is Advent?
Did you know that the word Advent is from the Latin word Adventus which means “coming”? Traditionally the season of Advent is celebrated with the lighting of candles–one each week leading up to Christmas. Technically Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas day, although today most people refer to their Advent calendars as starting 24 days before Christmas.
how to use your Nativity Advent
Last year I shared an Advent calendar of 24 ways to give service in the days leading up to Christmas. It’s perfect to slip into any refillable Advent calendar you might have and follow a different service prompt each day. Today I’ve collaborated with my sweet friend Heidi, to offer this beautiful coloring page for you all! Each figure in the nativity scene is numbered so that kids can color in each image of the nativity on a different day and follow the corresponding prompt. If you prefer I also have the nativity without numbers if you just want a fun coloring page to work on.
You can also make this fun printable part of your family’s Christmas décor by taking it into your local print shop and having the larger version printed as an engineer sheet. Engineer prints are an inexpensive way to get a large-scale print when you’re not concerned about having perfect quality. It’s so fun for your little ones to display this prominently somewhere and is a great conversation starter. Feel free to send any friends who would like a copy my way!
If you’re looking for more ways to keep your focus on the Savior during this busy holiday season I encourage you to #LightTheWorld with your family.
Did you enjoy Advent calendars growing up? Do you buy a new one every year for your kids?
If you liked this I would love it if you shared it with your friends and family! And please tag me on Instagram if you show of your Advent calendars!
