Ah, springtime. The time of year to throw our windows and doors open and welcome the fresh air! You know, unless it’s still winter white-out conditions where you live. And, all right, technically we still have almost a month until spring arrives. But after the stormy winter we’ve all had I think it’s safe to say bring it on! Why not get your house ready for warmer weather now with some spring updates for your home? That way when the flowers and sunshine do show up you’ll have time to enjoy them!
easy spring updates for your home
clean and organize your space
For some reason this time of year seems to spark a mad fury of cleaning and organizing. I mean, it’s called spring cleaning for a reason! One of the most important spring updates for your home? Well, nothing will make your home feel fresher and more inviting then giving it a good cleaning. This can be as simple or involved as you’d like. I suggest you make a list of everything you need to do, either by room or by category. Then have a deadline you’d like to be done by. One week? One month? A list will keep you on task and help you to not get overwhelmed. Not sure where to start? Check out my checklist for having your home show ready!
fresh paint makes a big impact
Paint is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to make a BIG impact. Whether it’s for spring updates in your home or just because. Giving a dingy room some new life or choosing a fun new color for an accent wall can make such a difference! You can even give your home some fresh spring curb appeal with a new color on your front door.
If you don’t even have the time or money to repaint a small room or single wall though, you can still brighten up your paint job! I highly recommend Mr. Clean Magic Erasers for scrubbing the art off of walls or buffing up baseboards. I know some people don’t like them because of the chemicals inside of them. Personally, some things are more green in our household than others. If you’d rather not deal with the chemicals, here’s a tutorial to make your own!
replace threadbare accent pieces
I’m not advocating that you go out and spend a fortune for all new home furnishings. However, even just replacing a few old throw pillows or a stained rug can make a big impact on a room and on your mood. I love the beautiful rugs from Lorena Canals. Not only do they have a wide variety of colors and themes for any decor, but they’re totally a mom win!
I’ve talked about them before but Lorena Canals actually makes washable rugs. That’s right–you can just throw your Lorena Canals rug in the washing machine when it gets dirty! I own two (one of which is off-white!) and I can personally vouch for how well they hold up!
You can also rest easy knowing that Lorena Canals only uses the best products. Their 100% cotton items are safe and soft for even the littlest one in your family. In the process of getting our house ready to show again I knew I wanted to brighten up my girls’ room a bit. The new English Garden rug in Ash Rose was the perfect addition to their room and they love it even more than I do! Plus, what’s more appropriate for spring time updates for your home than florals?!
nothing says spring like flowers
Speaking of florals… when Mike and I first got married we lived in one of the UCLA married apartments. Really, as first time dwellings go it was pretty nice and I did everything I could to make it feel more homey. I loved having fresh flowers to enjoy and I vowed that one day when I had a home I would always have fresh flowers.
Spoiler alert–that has not been the case. I do love fresh flowers and I have some in the home whenever I can, but it’s not always practical to fit them into our grocery budget. How can you say no to fresh flowers though, especially when this is one of the easiest spring updates for your home you can do! I have noticed an instant mood lift when I have them around though and there are ways you can save money if you want to enjoy fresh florals more often!
tips for keeping florals fresh
- Skip the roses–inexpensive flowers usually last longer! Cheaper flowers like daisies or carnations are still lovely to have in a vase and can last for well over a week if you care for them
- Trim and change the water regularly. When you first get your flowers home trim a tiny bit of the stems off. Trim the stems and change the water every couple of days.
- Say no to leaves. Strip off the leaves of the flowers or greenery that are below the water line. This will help keep the water clean and help your blooms stay fresh longer!
- A spoonful of sugar does wonders. I’ve heard tons of tricks and tips for keeping flowers fresh longer. Everything from lemon lime soda to pennies in the water. If you don’t have time to do research for what’s best for the flowers you have then a general rule is that some sugar water will help them stay fresh longer.
- Grow your own garden. Of course, you could save the most money by growing your own! Do some research and see which blooms have the longest growing season in your region or which are easiest to care for.
Bring the scent of spring in
I am a big believer in the power of fresh air so open your windows and doors whenever you can! However, if it’s still too cold where you live or allergies are a problem you can still have your house smell fresh!
My favorite way to make my house smell delicious is with essential oils. I have an essential oil diffuser that runs most of the day in our living room. In the holiday season I like to diffuse Holiday Joy, it just smells like Christmas and coziness to me! During cold and flu season I put in some On Guard. Lemon or Breathe are always good choice for a nice, fresh scent too.
I also love using wax melts as a safer alternative to candles in our home. Little Llama Wax Co. has a lot of great fresh scents for spring like Let’s Cuddle (a cozy honey and lavender scent) and Marie Antoinette which will have your home smelling like fresh-baked lemon pound cake.

OMG!!! I envy your spontaneity! There’s no way I’d be able to commit to a color enough to paint my door. I love the color you chose!
