Yes, I’m calling these edible Harry Potter wands magical. Why? Because they’re relatively easy and fun to make, and they taste delicious with just two (well, three) ingredients! How could you go wrong?! I actually made these last October for a fun Harry Potter-themed party that a friend of mine was throwing. I had asked if I could bring something and in my mind I was thinking cookies or cupcakes–something I could easily pick up from the store, you know? Well, I should really know my friend better than that because of course she asked if I could make some edible Harry Potter wands out of pretzel rods.

Oh. Um, sure.

You might remember that I made some edible Harry Potter wands last summer out of licorice but those were really more about being fun than being AWESOME. However, there was no way I could let my sweet friend down so if she wanted pretzel Harry Potter wands, then she would have them.

I did some quick searches and wasn’t really thrilled with anything that I saw. Either they were way too cutesy or they looked way too complicated. Then I saw some that actually kind of looked real and actually kind of looked doable. I wish that I could find the website where I originally got this idea to use cocoa powder. If I ever do find it I’ll be back to edit this post faster than you can say alohomora.

For these edible Harry Potter wands you’ll need:
  • large pretzel rods
  • good quality chocolate for melting (I prefer Ghirardelli chips or Guittard)
  • unsweetened cocoa powder
  • gold color mist (optional)

making your edible Harry Potter wands

The first thing you have to do is melt your chocolate without burning it. No need for a fancy-schmancy double broiler–using the microwave low and slow is the best and easiest method. Just follow the directions on your chocolate package! I covered my pretzel rod as far as I could and only left a tiny spot to hold onto it bare. You can use a spoon to help spread the melted chocolate on.

Once your “wand” is covered then roll onto parchment paper that has some cocoa powder on it using your hands. This helps your wands look more “real” (you know, as real as chocolate pretzel wands can) and the cocoa powder helps the chocolate not stick on everything. Bonus! The trick for these edible Harry Potter wands is that you have to have the chocolate set up just enough. If the chocolate is too melted on the pretzel rod when you go to roll it in the cocoa powder than it won’t work. Likewise, if the chocolate has already hardened too much the powder won’t still and you might break the pretzel.

I dipped a handful of pretzel rods, then I would roll those out and start on the next batch. If you need to kill some time while your chocolate is hardening why no find out which Hogwarts house you belong in? Go ahead, I’ll wait…

Once all your wands are finished and the chocolate is completely dry you can spray some color mist on the tips if you want to make them extra magical.

Um, why wouldn’t you?!

Have you made any type of Harry Potter wands before? What did you use?
