Boy, can you say that blog title five times fast?? Happy first day of Fall everyone! Or happy first day of Autumn if you prefer. Why is it that this Fall season is the only one with two names… I never understood that. Anyway, to celebrate the first day of Fall (although I know several of you have been living that PSL life since August) I wanted to to share a fun and festive post with you today. I’ve rounded up some of my favorite Fall-themed movies that are totally family-friendly and fun too. Okay, I’m done with the alliterations now.
favorite fall movies
Hocus Pocus
I just had to start the list with one of my favorite Halloween movies of all time. I introduced Hocus Pocus my kids a couple years ago and now they love it too. It’s nice to have a Halloween movie the whole family can watch together!
Little Women (1994 version)
I recently rewatched this movie and had forgotten how good it is! A movie that’s good anytime of year but has some strong Fall and Winter themes too. It might be a good idea to watch this version before the remake (or rather, the re-remake?? since there have actually been several adaptations over the years) comes out on Christmas Day later this year.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Truth be told, we usually cycle through all the Harry Potter movies every Fall but Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a good one to start with. Not only because it’s first, but it has that Halloween feast scene in it.
It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
No matter how many times we see it our family can’t help hoping that Linus will finally see The Great Pumpkin rise out of the pumpkin patch. After all, “…He’s gotta pick this one. He’s got to. I don’t see how a pumpkin patch can be more sincere than this one. You can look around and there’s not a sign of hypocrisy. Nothing but sincerity as far as the eye can see.”
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
Another Charlie Brown holiday favorite and really a quick little recap of the history of Thanksgiving. You know, sort of. Well, you get the basic gist. But so fun and definitely a good follow-up to It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. Plus, you can watch A Charlie Brown Christmas right after if you’ve got to get your Christmas movie fix in, STAT.
Remember the Titans
This Walt Disney film depicting football in a small town loosely follows a true story. A good film to watch for football fans and non-football fans, but you might want to save it for your older kids.
The Blind Side
Another great football movie that even non-football fans will love. Based on a true story there are a lot of heart-warming aspects. Keep in mind that this movie is the only PG-13 movie in the bunch so if it’s been awhile since you watched it you might want to have a quick screening before you pop it in for family movie night.
October Sky
An inspiring story about following your dreams and perseverance, October Sky is based on the novel Rocket Boys, which was inspired by a true story. This would also be a good film to work into a history unit if you homeschool!
Casper
I loved this movie when I was younger but my kids didn’t see it until last year when we went to Tower Park Resort for one of their Halloween weekends. Needless to day, they loved it! I’ve made a mental note to include it in our normal Fall movies rotation.
You’ve Got Mail
This one is probably just going to be for mom unless you’ve got some cool teenage daughters. Of course you can enjoy this Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks classic anytime of year but the change of seasons the film depicts will make you want to snuggle up under a blanket with some hot cocoa.
