It was just about three months ago that Mike and I went on a cruise sans kids–but it seems like a lifetime ago. There are still so many posts I want to share about our trip but with cold and flu season coming up I thought the timing was right for this one. These healthy travel tips are definitely applicable anytime–whether you’re far away or staying home. Please keep in mind that I am not a medical professional and these tips are based off of my own experience. Some links contain affiliates, all opinions are my own.
4 healthy travel tips
stay active
Sure, you’re on a vacation and if you’re like most people than one of your main objectives is probably to relax, right? But if you balance some activity with your rest it will help you feel more energized. It will also help you to feel less blah when you get home. The easiest way to stay active? Walking. We might have been stuck out in the middle of the ocean but I’ve never had any problem getting my steps in on a cruise. We went to the onboard gym once but I much prefer to take a few laps on deck in the fresh air. And taking the stairs whenever possible instead of the elevators can make a big difference too!

dine wisely
It’s easy to go overboard while you’re traveling, after all, all the food looks so good. And Mike and I both feel very strongly about food not going to waste so it’s hard for us to not finish something. If possible request or give yourself smaller portions. Sharing plates with your travel buddy can also be a great way to try everything and not overindulge. I also recommend cutting back on carbs while traveling even if it’s not something you typically do. You can have bread anywhere so why not skip the rolls at dinner and enjoy some of that special dessert instead? And don’t forget to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before every meal–especially while you’re traveling!
take supplements
I’ve been drinking Macro Greens and Miracle Reds Superfoods from Macro Life Naturals almost every morning for about a year now. I usually blend it with some frozen fruit in the morning but when we travel I just portion single servings into plastic baggies. That way I can mix with a morning cup of juice or water. I’m no medical professional but I do know that I notice a difference when I don’t start my day with a glass.
I’m also a big believer in black elderberry. At home we take the gummies daily during cold and flu season or when we start feeling a little sick. If we actually come down with something then we switch to the syrup. I took the gummies with me on our cruise and took one every day because I know how easy it is to spread germs on a cruise ship. I swear by these products and everyone in our household has been much healthier the past year since we’ve been taking them. It could be a coincidence of course… but I doubt it.
get rest
Make sure to get sleep while you’re traveling! With all the late nights and early mornings it can be easy to run on empty. Especially when you’re on a cruise like we were–there’s always something going on and activities run late! But remember that you are on vacation, so unless there’s something you have to wake up early cut yourself some slack and sleep in. Decide which late night activities are a priority and which can be skipped.
