One thing I rely on quite a bit as a homeschooling mom is a good worksheet. Don’t get me wrong, I love real-world applications and field trips too. However, worksheets can be great to reinforce ideas, check for understanding of concepts, or for those days when you need a little “break”. This past year with my older kids I’ve been using more and more writing prompts. It’s been so rewarding to see how far they’ve come with their writing skills and even their penmanship as the year has progressed. Since I’ve so appreciated all the free resources I’ve found online I wanted to give back. I’ve created an entire year of writing prompts that are completely free to use. There are two prompts for each month, one for beginner writers and one for those who are more advanced. First up, the Spring writing prompts–prompts for March, April, and May.

You’ll notice that on each month’s writing prompt I made sure to include space for illustrations. I’m a big believer in the importance of art and creativity. I also know that some kids really benefit from being able to express themselves through art as well as words. On the older writing prompt I left space for kids to write out captions for their images as well. I’ve learned with my own fourth grader that’s an important concept to learn.
Keep in mind that these writing prompts are not just for those of you who homeschool. These are great to have on hand to reinforce concepts at home, to use on road trips, or keep as a journal for the year! As I mentioned, it’s so fun to look back on these writing prompts and see how far your child has come!

Such a great resource for parents. I love the idea of having a monthly writing prompt that turns into a journal for the year. Such a great way to see improvement and growth in kids writing.
