Believe it or not Summer is only a little over a month away. To be honest, with the exception of this week it’s felt like Summer has already come to northern California! We’ve been enjoying our 80 degree temps with lots of time spent outdoors and even some time in the pool! As we prepare for Summer weather and Summer fun I thought I’d share three simple ways to help keep your kids safe in the sun, including why UV protective swimwear is so important. This post is in partnership with SwimZip. I am not a medical professional and all opinions are my own.

One of the best ways to keep your kids safe in the water is by purchasing quality UV protective swimwear. Our family has loved SwimZip for years! Not only for their adorable coordinating suits, but because they’re made with UPF 50+ protection. Their new lemon collection is perfect for Summer with its bright yellow and aqua hues and as I said, it all coordinates together!

I love that SwimZip offers a full range of UV protective swimwear from wide-brim sun hats to rash guards for the whole family. The rash guards that are easily zipped on and off are a particular favorite feature of mine because anything that makes my mom life easier is a major win! We also love their new Swim Leggings because they’re perfect for our hikes to the river!

I always try to remember to keep sunscreen in my purse, especially in the Summer. That way whether we’re headed to the park or the river we’re ready to safely enjoy the sun. Even with great UV protective swimwear from SwimZip you want to be sure to use sunscreen on exposed areas. One shouldn’t replace the other, they should go hand-in-hand.

We like to look for sunscreens that are cruelty free and reef-friendly. That way we know we’re doing some good for our skin and good for the planet. I also feel much better about what I’m applying to my family’s skin all year long. Don’t forget to reapply after excessive sweating or swimming. Be sure to check your sunscreen bottle for recommended reapplication times.

practice water safety

Teaching your child to swim and the dangers of water is so important. I think it’s important to keep in mind that you don’t want them to be scared of the water, but you do want them to be aware and respectful of water. Lay down the ground rules for when they’re around water and remind them often. Consider teaching older kids how to do a safe rescue from the side of the pool and train in CPR.

Whether your child is a veteran you should always be alert around water. Lifeguard-approved lifejackets and puddle jumpers are essential for non-swimmers or those just learning–even when parents are around. And be extra diligent around open bodies of water. Even experienced swimmers can find themselves in trouble.

Water Safety

If you have a pool you want to be especially careful and have safety measures in place. In the state of California you must have two of the seven recommended safety measures safeguarding your pool. The day we moved into our house we had a pool safety net installed that has definitely given us peace of mind over the past year. But remember that no safety feature replaces adult supervision around water!

This is definitely a must in Texas! Mason is also fair-skinned so anything I can do to help protect him, I am all over it. I need to try the Coola brand!
