5 simple ways to teach your toddler
We are officially back to school and I can attest that this is the strangest school year so far. We made the switch from the homeschool hybrid program we’ve been doing almost since day one to local Charter School this year. However, in California schools can’t be back on site yet so I’m doing this whole distance learning thing and it is bizarre. To be honest, I’m not a fan–BUT we’re making the best of it and my kids are doing awesome.
read to your children everyday
It sounds simple enough but did you know that 32% of fourth graders aren’t reading at a basic level? The best way to teach your toddler is to read to them. If a child starts reading 20 minutes a day in Kindergarten then they hear 1,800,00 words a year and by sixth grade they will likely score better than 90% of their peers on standardized tests.
I recently received the Priddy Books Early Learning Collection and the colorful and sturdy pages make them the perfect books to snuggle up and read with my toddler! I was very impressed by how interactive they were too. The pages are very tactile which makes her extra excited to read them with me!
hunt for the alphabet while going for a walk
Being active is an important part of the learning process. Especially for little learners, they need to keep moving and be engaged–it’s hard to sit still! Take a “break” from learning and go for a walk. While you’re out ask your children what objects they see that start with the letter A, B, C… and so on.

count out the items on their plate at lunch
Lunch or snack time is a great time to incorporate learning because they’re occupied and their brains are being fueled! Have your child count the items on their plates. Older children can add and subtract snack items, or even make their own multiplication arrays on their plates of food!
The First 100 Numbers board book from Priddy Books is a great snack companion. Use the numbers on the pages to reinforce the number of food items on their plates. The pages will easily wipe clean so you don’t need to worry about crumbs getting on the pages.
have them color while teaching older siblings
When we’re doing our homeschool lessons together (once distance learning is done for the day) I like to teach all the kids together. This can be a challenge when you have kids ranging in age from preschool to fifth grade! Often the little ones will just be in the vicinity coloring while we’re having a discussion. That’s okay! You’d be amazed at what their little minds soak up.

go on a color scavenger hunt
This is another great opportunity to go get some fresh air and get those wiggles out! Go on a walk around your house or neighborhood and ask your child to name the colors they see. Ask them to find certain colors or ask them to point out what colors they see and name them.
The Alphaprints: Colors book that we received from Priddy Books is a fun companion for these color scavenger hunts. And the short text on each page means that my two year old already almost has it memorized!
One Response to teach your toddler daily without them knowing
Those books look so fun. Reading is a big part of our day and then letting them “help” with daily things is a great way to learn. It’s amazing how many school lessons you can make part of a normal day.
