Well, this post went up about a week behind schedule, but I finally got it up. And with it I have now completed writing prompts for each month of the year! Since this was my goal all along I’m pretty pleased with myself. With these winter writing prompts you can now find a full year’s worth of prompts on my blog. These are perfect for keeping a year-long journal. You could even bind up all of your children’s journal entries at the end of the year!

winter writing prompts

In talking with the kid’s teachers this year I’ve learned that a lot of kids are struggling. Especially those beginner readers seem to really be suffering with this extended virtual learning experience. It’s maybe more important than ever to help our kids work on their reading and writing–it’s the basis of all other learning!

how to help young learners

You will probably find the younger kids need some assistance with spelling for their writing assignments. There are several methods to help them with their writing.

  • Have them write phonetically. One technique to help little ones spell is just to have them do the best they can without help. Ask them to write what they want and then “read” it back to you.
  • Write it for them to trace over. Write our what they dictate to you with a light crayon or pencil. Then they trace over your letters. This also helps them learn technique and letter spacing.
  • Copy it down on a piece of paper first. What I do most often with my beginner readers is I have them tell me what they want to write and I write it all out on a piece of scratch paper. Then I have them copy it onto their paper.
