Happy Earth Day! Today I have an unpopular opinion for you. It’s especially an unpopular opinion to share on a day that’s supposed to celebrate our earth. I’ve never been a big fan of succulents. There, I said it. Whew–it feels good to get that off my chest! However, I can definitely appreciate their low maintenance needs and the fact that you can basically just pop pieces of them off and replant them anywhere. So over the past year or so I’ve started appreciating them a little more… I mean, they’ll never take the place of flowers in my book, but succulents have formed a little place in my heart. So here’s a DIY tutorial for Earth Day to make your own living succulent wreath.
diy living succulent wreath
If you have a succulent plant at home this project costs very little money. I bought my wreath form from the dollar store and a couple bags of moss from Walmart. So at the end of this project I had spent less than $10. My mother-in-law had brought us several succulent plants over the time we’ve lived in this house. Unfortunately, they were in our garden area and had to be moved so we could plant. I was planning to transplant one to the front yard and figured this succulent wreath would be a neat project to do with some of them (we had three decent sized succulent plants). I definitely recommend shopping for your supplies locally if you can because you’ll save money. But if you can’t I have supplies linked below and you can order off of Amazon!

materials needed:
- wreath form
- Spanish moss
- green moss
- succulents
- hot glue and glue gun
- floral wire
Working in small areas at a time you need to cover your wreath form with hot glue, then cover with the moss. Start with your Spanish moss, then layer the green moss on top. Once all your moss in in place you can start adding your succulents. When placing hot glue on your succulents make sure that you never cover the tip with hot glue, always glue around the sides of the stem.
To help hold the moss and succulents in place on the DIY living succulent wreath, use a floral wire and wrap around the entire wreath, securing it in place but hiding the wire within the succulents. Once your wreath is completed make sure the moss stays damp but not too saturated! My tips is that you remove the wreath from you door and water from the backside of the wreath and not the front. Don’t be alarmed if there’s a transition period where your succulents look a little sad–they should perk up over time!
