Out family roadtrips a lot. My kids are no strangers to 12 hour car days and limited screen time. They are familiar with our routines we have for travel days and they do pretty well. Even so, my husband and I have learned over the years that if me make the trip a little more about the journey and not just the destination, we’ll all be happier. Today I’m sharing one of our favorite stops along I-80–the California Trail Interpretive Center.

California Trail Interpretive Center

Between 1841 and 1869, up to 250,000 people sold their belongings, packed wagons, and set out for California. The California Trail Interpretive Center offers dioramas and interactive exhibits that immerse the visitor in the trail experience of those who endured the 2,000 mile trek.

Right off the bat I want to let you know one of the best things about this gem in Elko, Nevada–it’s completely free. There are interactive exhibits, video presentations, and authentic reproductions. They even will occasionally host events or themed weekends that feature presentations hosted by volunteers. We love stopping on our trips across Nevada for an hour or so to stretch our legs and learn something new. Keep in mind that hours and services are currently reduced. Please check their website for more information.

The California Trail Interpretive Center is part of the California National Historic Trail and the Pony Express National Historic Trail and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. I suggest you allow one to two hours to explore the property. There are restrooms and a gift shop on site but no food available so plan accordingly.

Looks like a fun place to stop. We will have to add it to our list of places to visit when we are on the west coast.
