When we visited South Carolina in December I knew we would be within an hour of Congaree National Park. Being that close to a brand-new-to-us National Park was too hard to resist! So when my mom asked if we wanted to make the drive up and visit it of course I was thrilled! One more National Park checked off our list! Keep reading for tips on exploring Congaree National Park with kids.
Congaree National Park
Originally known as Congaree Swamp National Monument it was designated a National Park in 2003. It is located roughly two hours from Charleston, South Carolina, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Augusta, Georgia. It protects the largest old growth forest in the southeastern United States and its flood plain creates a valuable ecosystem for the plants and animals you’ll find there.
Insider tip: The trails can often be covered in water and insects can be plentiful, especially in warmer months! Be prepared for current conditions before you hike.

things to do with kids in Congaree National Park
I always recommend that you stop by a Visitor Center when you are in one of our National Parks. These can be especially great places to go when you are exploring with your little ones. They often have fun and interactive exhibits that kids love. Best of all, you can pick up a junior Ranger booklet for your kids to fill out! Once they have done the specified number of activities (each park is different) they can get sworn in as a Junior Ranger and receive a pin!

I highly recommend taking the Boardwalk Loop Trail whether or not you are visiting Congaree National Park with kids. It is a very easy and fairly level path and because it is a boardwalk it is stroller accessible. It also gives you an opportunity to see a lot of what the park has to offer in a small amount of time. Be sure to pick up a guide that offers a self-guided tour at the visitors center before you head out.
other things to do
- canoeing and kayaking
- fishing in most areas of the park
- camping at a park campsite
- visit the synchronous fireflies in late spring (usually sometime mid-May to mid-June)
