Can you believe that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner? Doesn’t it seem like it was just Christmas? As a blogger holidays can especially sneak up on you because we have to be prepared with holiday content when you want it! Did you know holiday content used to trend on Pinterest 45 days ahead of the holiday? However, in 2021 holiday searches saw an 80% increase–in April. By those statistics I’m already way behind in sharing these Valentine’s Day worksheets with you!
what are the origins?
The origins of Valentine’s Day are a little hazy, which may be why so many people say that it’s a made up holiday. In fact, Valentine’s Day didn’t become associated with romance until the 14th century. It may be that Valentine’s Day has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia. Lupercalia was a festival held in mid-February and was a celebration of the coming of spring. Traditionally the festival included fertility rites and pairing off women with men by a lottery. Pope Gelasius I forbid the celebration of Lupercalia in the 5th century and some believe that St. Valentine’s Day replaced that festival.
Still another possible origin of Valentine’s Day lies in its name. There are at least three different saints recognized by the Catholic Church named Valentine or Valentinus. All three were martyred and are involved in stories of romantic love. From performing secret marriages between lovers to sending love letters, all could be the origin for the modern Valentine’s Day celebrations. The truth is, we don’t know and for most of us today it’s just a fun reason to show a little bit extra love and eat copious amounts of chocolates.
Valentine’s Day worksheets
I created four Valentine’s Day worksheets for your elementary aged kids. Two that are math and two that are ELA. The math pages are probably more appropriate for younger kids, while the ELA pages might work better with older kids. Although to be honest with you, my 4th grader wanted to do the fact families page when she saw it!
I am a big believer in teaching children classic literature which is why I incorporated a classic poem into the crossword worksheet. There is also a little history of Cupid on the word search page which I thought was interesting. You learn something new every day! I had a lot of fun designing these Valentine’s Day worksheets for your kids and I hope they enjoy them!
