We’re nearing the end of summer break and I’m pretty heartbroken. I’m one of those moms that loves summer break with my kids. Especially now that we don’t homeschool anymore, I feel like this time with my kids is so precious. However, even I by the end of summer am sometimes looking for some new and different ideas. So today I’m sharing how to make your own DIY sidewalk chalk. It’s actually really easy and fun to do! Plus, it takes two days so it’s kind of like two activities in one.
DIY sidewalk chalk
Once you pour the liquid into the mold your sidewalk chalk will have to dry for about 24 hours. The nice thing about this is that it extends this to a two day project. If you want to incorporate a homeschool lesson your first day could be a science lesson, and the second day could be a fun art class! Just keep in mind that because this chalk has Plaster of Paris in it you do not want to use it on a chalkboard–it should only be used as sidewalk chalk.
materials needed:
- Dry Plaster of Paris
- Silicone Molds
- Mica Color Powder (I have tons leftover from this project)
- Water
- Measuring Utensils and Cups for Mixing
You may need to play around with amounts to achieve the results you want, but this activity is very forgiving! You want to mix roughly two parts Plaster of Paris with one part water. I would start with about one cup of Plaster of Paris and ½ cup of water. Then add more materials if you want to make more chalk or if you need to adjust consistency. For colors I used Mica color powder. Every other “recipe” I found online used tempera paint, but since I had Mica color powder I decided to try using that and I love the results! Just add until you reach your desired color.
