what is a Boysenberry?

A Boysenberry is a cross between a Loganberry, Raspberry, and Blackberry. Walter Knott could have named this hybrid berry for himself as it’s thanks to him that it became what it is today. However, he consulted with the US Government Bureau of Plant Industries. They decided to name it for the horticulturist who invented it. Rudolf Boysen was a Swedish immigrant who loved experimenting with cross-breeds of flowers and berry plants. Due to Walter Knott’s perseverance with Boysen’s berry, every Boysenberry plant in the world is descended from Knott’s farm in Buena Park, California.

celebrating at the Boysenberry Festival

As part of his marketing genius, Walter Knott started a “Taste of Boysenberry Festival” back when the Boysenberry was first introduced. This was the perfect way to introduce this delicious hybrid berry to the public. The Boysenberry quickly became popular with the public thanks to its flavor and larger-than normal size.

I’ve been eating boysenberries on funnel cake when they 1st charged admission to get into Knott’s (Fiesta Village section and The Calico Log Ride debuted the following year). Once you pick up the homemade jellies from Knott’s? you’ll never pick up that stuff licensed to Smuckers again from the local markets.

Knott’s is still more affordable than Disneyland, offers enough to enjoy for most of the day, still retains it’s charm and you can thank Knott’s Berry Farm for the October retheming done it every Theme Park (Knott’s started doing at in 1973 with KHJ-TV ‘s Seymour – that’s now KCAL Channel 9 and at one time the Walt Disney Company owned the Station – I just miss when it was more scary).

I heard from smuckers that they have discontinued the Knotts Berry Farm Boysenberry Jam!!! This is so sad to hear. That’s what started the Knotts Farm. I couldn’t find anymore locally so I emailed their customer service from their Knotts page and found out they are no longer making it!
