As a mom to seven children age 13 and under it’s important that everyone in our household is as healthy as possible. Especially since I don’t want anyone to miss out on our family adventures! That means getting enough sleep, eating the right food, staying active, and taking medicine when we need to. However, sometimes taking medicine can be a struggle for some kids. That’s why I think that flavored medicine for children can be such a blessing for some families! Here is what you need to know about Assembly Bill 782 as California looks to restrict flavored medicine for children. This information is sponsored by Jordan’s Guardian Angels a non-profit organization working with families with special needs children who are challenged with the need to administer a variety of life-saving medication to their children who face many physical and intellectual disabilities.
California Looks to Restrict Flavored Medicine for Children
Sometimes the simplest solutions can have the greatest impact, such as making medication more palatable for children. However, the California Board of Pharmacy is now considering limitations on this straightforward remedy.
The California Board of Pharmacy wants to mandate that medicine flavoring for toddlers and children be considered a compounding process. That means that it can only be carried out by compounding pharmacies.
Assemblywoman Tina McKinnor (D-Inglewood), Jacqui Irwin (D-Thousand Oaks), and Assemblyman Tom Lackey (R-Palmdale)–Democratic and Republican members–have introduced Assembly Bill 782. This would continue to allow community pharmacies to flavor medicine for our toddlers and children.

Here are a few articles on this issue and a link to the legislation. There is also a compound pharmacy finder to see the distance you would have to travel:

This bill would, notwithstanding those provisions, specify that compounding does not include reconstitution of a drug pursuant to a manufacturer’s directions, the sole act of tablet splitting or crushing, capsule opening, or the addition of a flavoring agent to enhance palatability.
