Mike and I recently spend a couple of days on the California coast, just the two of us. It was our first getaway in well over a year and it was so nice to relax and unwind. We’ve been to Carmel twice before, once on our honeymoon, and once with the kids a couple of years ago. Today I’m sharing how to spend a romantic weekend in Carmel. Here are our tips on what to see, what to do, and where to eat in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
an itinerary for a romantic weekend in Carmel
Picture this–a charming seaside village with cobblestone streets, ivy-clad cottages, and breathtaking ocean views. It’s like something out of a fairytale book and the perfect setting for a romantic getaway for two. That’s Carmel-by-the-Sea, a hidden gem nestled along the rugged California coastline just north of Big Sur. If you’re seeking the perfect destination for a romantic weekend getaway with your spouse, Carmel is the perfect choice. Being three hours from the Sacramento area, and just a little over five hours from Los Angeles, it’s a great destination for a romantic weekend.
stay at Hofsas House
We were able to stay at the delightful Hofsas House again. Hofsas House has been a beacon of warmth and hospitality for generations of travelers. Its Bavarian-inspired architecture and family-owned spirit creates a unique and memorable experience for those looking to get away. Founded in 1947 by Donna Hofsas, Hofsas House was built on the principles of family, tradition, and community. Carrie Theis is the current owner and continues her grandmother’s legacy of providing warm hospitality to visitors from around the world. If you’re lucky, you may be able to chat with her to get her recommendations when you check in or stop by for your complimentary continental breakfast.

Other amenities include a heated pool, meeting room, and dry sauna. While there, we stayed in a Marie-Clare suite, so named for the former artist in residence. The door and the headboard were hand painted by her in the classic Bavarian-style of the rest of Hofsas House. This room (room 36) overlooks the ocean and even had a gas fireplace. It was so perfect for those chilly, seaside evenings. The cozy and hospitable surroundings were the perfect place for our romantic weekend in Carmel.
what to see in the area
Carmel-by-the-Sea is famous for their powdery, white sand beaches. It also very dog friendly if you happened to bring your four-legged friend. If the weather is warm and sunny you’ll definitely want to head down Ocean Avenue for some Vitamin Sea. You can also go hiking around Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, just south of downtown. There are scenic trails for hiking, tidepools for exploring, and even a small museum.

No matter the weather, you can get some epic ocean views. Don’t miss the chance to embark on a scenic drive along the iconic 17-Mile Drive. This world-famous route offers stunning views of the rugged coastline, including the iconic Lone Cypress tree. The entrance fee for 17-Mile Drive is $11.75, which will get refunded if you purchase $35+ from one of their restaurants. It’s the perfect way to spend the afternoon!

When you’re done with the beach, Ocean Avenue is just a short stroll away from Hofsas House. No romantic weekend in Carmel would be complete without some shopping along the stretch of quaint shops–and some delicious pastries are a must! The outdoor Carmel Plaza is also a fun place to get some quality shopping and dining time together.

what to eat during your romantic weekend in Carmel
There’s a delicious and unique eatery everywhere you turn in in this seaside town. What better way to spend a romantic weekend in Carmel then by enjoying a candlelit dinner? We loved Carmel’s Bistro Giovanni, which is conveniently located near Hofsas House. Mike got one of the specials, and I loved the Goat Cheese Ravioli.

If you’re looking for a more casual atmosphere, Brophy’s Tavern is also located close to Hofsas House. Right across the street, as a matter of fact. This place gets busy on game nights, but it’s also a super fun date night atmosphere as you dine while watching your favorite teams play. We shared the cobb salad and a few appetizers–we highly recommend the giant pretzel with dipping sauces.
when should you visit Carmel-by-the-Sea?
In my opinion, there is no bad time to visit Carmel. The area has a Mediterranean climate and enjoys moderate temperatures all year long. July and August tend to be the busiest months, as tourists are most often visiting then. Meanwhile, November through January are typically least busy. Also pay attention to golf tournaments happening in adjoining Pebble Beach as it can make town a little busier as well.
