where is Nevada City?
Nevada City, California is situated at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains less than two hours northeast of Sacramento. Nevada City is considered to be one of the best preserved California Gold Rush-era towns still left. Its charm comes from the small town vibes that are present in the people and the businesses. There is also a lot of history to soak in and this family friendly camping in Nevada City is the perfect homebase for your adventure.
family friendly camping in Nevada City
Mike and I first visited Inn Town Campground in 2017, less than a year after they opened. At that time we stayed in on f their glamping tents and had a fabulous time! We talked a lot about coming back with the kiddos, but one thing after another popped up and before you know it 7 years had gone by. That’s why we were thrilled to come back with our kids, dog, and travel trailer to experience it again. We were really able to appreciate what makes Inn Town Campground the ideal spot for family friendly camping in Nevada City.
Inn Town Campground: family friendly camping in Nevada City
Inn Town Campground opened in July of 2016. Since then it’s been serving camping enthusiasts and family travel lovers with its variety of accommodation options. There is so much that makes Inn Town Campground special, but at the heart of it all is the hard work and love that the owners–Dan and Erin Thiem–have poured into every inch of the campground over the years.
different ways to camp
I love that Inn Town Campground offers such a variety of ways to camp. There are 18 RV sites, many of which offer full hookups. It’s also important to note that they do not have “age discrimination” for RVs and trailers on site. Meaning, you don’t have to have a brand new RV to stay there. So many RV parks these days won’t let you have older RVs and trailers and it can be hard for those people to find quality campgrounds to stay at. We loved walking around the campground and spotting some of the beautiful vintage trailers!

If you don’t have an RV or trailer no worries, there are plenty of options for you! Inn Town Campground has over 30 tent campsites and you can easily search for spots that have space for more than one vehicle, or camper-van friendly options on their website! Looking for something a step up from a traditional tent? You can also choose from over 20 glamping tents or even a family yurt to stay in! And camping has never been easier with clean bathrooms and showers on site, as well as stocked dishwashing stations. There is even a communal kitchen and gathering area know as The Commons.
family-friendly amenities
A stay at Inn Town Campground is family camping at its best. The 15 acre property is full of pine trees towering over the campsites, with plenty of room for kids to run around and be kids. With its location off the freeway and nestled between the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum and a local church the area feel safe and secure. The entire campground from the bathrooms to the grounds are kept clean and tidy. It’s easy to see why this option for family friendly camping in Nevada City has been voted #1 RV Campground by USA Today for the third year in a row.

Inn Town Campground has a pool that is open seasonally, mid-May to early December. They also offer outdoor family movie nights. Movies are every weekend year round, weather permitting. A little birdie told me that they’ll show movies by request during the week too, wink wink. The cinematic offerings the weekend we were there were Monsters Inc. and The Goonies–both movies our kids love! We first introduced them to the 1980s cult classic in 2020 when we visited Astoria, Oregon on a road trip so they were excited to watch it again. Movie times will vary with the time of year but it’s listed up in the front office window.
If you also have four-legged members of your family you’ll find that they’re welcome too! Dogs are welcome at Inn Town Campground and several businesses and attractions in Nevada City. It was fun to be able to bring our adopted family member on our vacation with us and not feel like we were limited to which activities we could do.

[…] On our recent family camping trip at Inn Town Campground, we were able to walk just a mile from the campground to the heart of downtown. However, there is also plenty of public parking around the area. There are several fun shops to check out, and lots of delicious dining options. Our family loved Treats Ice Cream, and the Creekside Restaurant, now under new ownership. If you have a four-legged friend traveling with you you’ll be happy to know that many places are dog-friendly. Just be aware and courteous of signs. […]
