I love where our family lives. We’re in the beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains so there’s an abundance of great hiking and outdoor activities. We also benefit from a small town feel with all the conveniences of a big city and close proximity to destinations like Sacramento, Reno, and the Bay Area. This means that we can usually look right in our own backyard for a great family weekend away or day trip. Such is the case with a recent family camping trip when we journey less than an hour from our home. Keep reading for all our tips for visiting Nevada City with kids.
what makes Nevada City with kids so special?
Nevada City is one of the best preserved towns from California’s Gold Rush era. The town has kept the integrity of the area’s rich history and beautiful Victorian buildings. You can immerse yourself in history, while still enjoying modern conveniences. It has attracted a diverse and eclectic community and unique eateries, small shops, and outdoor adventures abound. There is an array of family friendly activities, but the truth is it’s the perfect getaway for anyone. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or a family vacation, you’ll find something to do.
what to do in Nevada City with kids
The star of Nevada City, California is the outdoor activities. From camping to hiking it’s an outdoor lovers dream. But there’s also plenty to see (and eat) in historic downtown Nevada City and your kids will have a great time trying the sweet treats and checking out the eclectic shops.
walk around town
On our recent family camping trip at Inn Town Campground, we were able to walk just a mile from the campground to the heart of downtown. However, there is also plenty of public parking around the area. There are several fun shops to check out, and lots of delicious dining options. Our family loved Treats Ice Cream, and the Creekside Restaurant, now under new ownership. If you have a four-legged friend traveling with you you’ll be happy to know that many places are dog-friendly. Just be aware and courteous of signs.
Deer Creek Tribute Trail
The Deer Creek Tribute Trail is a great choice for a family hike. Totaling 8 miles along the Deer Creek, you can decide how short or long you want your hike to be. To hold you child’s interest there are two bridges along the trails and areas you can get down to the water. There’s also plenty of shade, but watch out for the poison oak and be sure you pack out what you pack in. Dogs are allowed on leash.
Nevada Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum
The Nevada Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum is located right next to Inn Town Campground, making this a fun must-do in Nevada City with kids! Admission is free, although donations are accepted (and encouraged). Railbus rides are also available on the weekends, seasonally. You can peruse at your leisure, or you can have a museum docent lead you around.
Empire Mine State Historic Park
Empire Mine State Historic Park is technically not in Nevada City, but it is just a short drive away in Grass Valley. You can explore the beautiful grounds and gardens, and even take a 45 minute guided tour if you’d like. You can also step into the actual mine itself, at least the first 50 feet or so of the mine shaft. Even better, it’s one of the state parks that your California 4th grader can visit for free with their Adventure Pass.
seasonal activities in Nevada City with kids
There is something to do in every season in Nevada City and the surrounding area. The Nevada City Farmers Market takes place on Saturday mornings throughout the year, in varying locations depending on which month it is. Find out more information by clicking here.
Summer offers a never-ending supply of outdoor and water activities. From exploring local waterholes in the South Yuba River, to river rafting with H2O Adventures. There is also the Nevada County Fair in August to look forward to; and Hot Summer Nights takes place on select Wednesdays in July, which is a free family-friendly event.
Wintertime is especially magical in Nevada City as Victorian Christmas takes over the streets of historic downtown. On Wednesdays and Sundays in December leading up to Christmas you can enjoy carolers, festive treats, and more in Nevada City. Accommodations are already booking up for this crowd favorite event! Later in the winter season, Nevada City hosts the Wild and Scenic Film Festival, which takes place over five days in February.
This is just a small sampling of some of the fun family-friendly things to do in Nevada City with kids. I highly recommend a visit with your family. It’s an easy day trip from Sacramento, or a great weekend getaway!
