Trying to put together a family Halloween costume that will work for nine people and we all agree on can be a difficult task. However, I will keep doing it as long as I can because the result is always so worth it! We held a family meeting at the end of August to discuss different options. Mario, Ghostbusters, and Newsies all made the cut. In the end though, we decided that a Greek Gods family costume would be perfect! Check out how we pulled it all together and which Greek Gods we chose to dress up as. Links contain affiliates. All opinions are my own.
how to pull together a Greek gods family costume
I had found a couple of great articles (included at the end of this blog post) with how to DIY some costumes. Originally, I had planned to DIY a lot more than I did. However, once I started pricing out costumes versus fabric and raw materials, it just made more sense for me to purchase most of our costumes. Whether you want to DIY or buy, I hope you find some great inspiration for your own Greek Gods family costume!
Greek gods of the underworld family costume: Hades, Persephone, and Cerberus
I know typically when I see other Greek Gods family costume the parents are Zeus and Hera. However, since getting Gryff last year we like to try to work him into our costume and obviously Cerberus came to mind. Plus, does anyone else kind of hate Hera? So Mike and I were Hades and Persephone, with Cerberus as our trusty guard of the Underworld. Mike just wore his black graduation robe with some red fabric draped around it. (More pictures of us to come…)
Meanwhile, I ordered my costume on Amazon and added some extra fabric for some extra coverage. Some faux mini pomegranates in my hair finished off my look. For Gryff, I found some stuffed dogs that kind of looked like him and cut their heads off to attach to his collar. Ta-da–he instantly became a three-headed guard dog. So scary, wink wink.
sea god & goddess: Poseidon and Calypso
I was so excited that my High School freshman still wanted to dress up with us. I gave him every opportunity to just wear a Camp Half-Blood t-shirt but he wanted a full-on a costume. Along with the Eros costume, this one was the biggest DIY and I took a lot of inspiration for his Poseidon costume from Alia at Party Like a Cherry.
With all the girls in our family I had to get a little creative with some of our goddesses. But I also knew that my six year old would fall in love with the idea of a Greek Gods family costume once she saw the pretty sea-inspired headband she got to wear as the minor goddess Calypso. I actually had a lot of fun pulling her costume together and leaning into the sea theme.
goddesses of the hunt and war: Artemis and Athena
Somehow, everyone wanted to be different Greek gods from the beginning. So two of my daughters were really excited to be Athena, goddess of wisdom and war, and Artemis, goddess of the hunt. It was really fun picking out dresses that we thought would go well with these two goddesses.
Their costume accessories are pretty cool too. I found this neat bow and rubber-tipped arrow set on Amazon and it actually shoots pretty well! And the neat sword and shield combo set for the Athena costume has a handy brace that keeps it on your arm. That makes it easy to carry around!
love is in the air: Aphrodite and Eros
It shocked me that none of my older girls wanted to be Aphrodite but it worked out perfectly because my four year old has had a fun time telling everyone that she’s “the goddess of love”. Her costume doesn’t have any fun extra accessories like her big sisters, but she was very excited about the gold heart tattoos I found. I actually used several different ones on all the kids. They were a fun touch to the costumes!
It was a little tricky to think of someone for our baby girl to be. In the end, we decided it was okay for a girl to be Eros (you might be more familiar with his Roman name–Cupid). Her costume came together with a pink onesie with some leftover gauze material attached and some gold accent around her waist. White wings and felt arrows from Amazon completed her look.
Greek goddess of the harvest: Demeter
Rounding out our Greek Gods family costume is Demeter. I loved the costume that Ashley from Make It Love It was able to DIY and originally I was going to make that. However, when I found this green wrap dress on Amazon I knew that would give me a similar look for a lot less work. This beautiful costume with the floral head wreath was perfect for my 11 year old daughter and was the perfect completion to our family costume. Just ignore that Demeter is technically Persephone’s mom because then it all just gets a little confusing…
how to DIY a Greek gods family costume
It was so fun pulling these costumes together! I love the way they all look together, but they also look phenomenal on their own. I chose to mainly buy the pieces for all our costumes, but you could also DIY a lot of this. Here are a couple of blog posts that I took a lot of inspiration from. They also break down how to DIY more of it instead of buying it if that’s the route you want to take:
