Just before Christmas Break for the past few years I have hosted a cookie decorating party for my girls. They each invite a few of their friends and have a fun couple of hours frosting pre-baked cookies, pouring copious amounts of sprinkles onto their creations, and consuming way too much sugar. Hey, you’re only young once, right? This has become a fun yearly tradition that we all look forward to. Bonus–it’s a pretty low-key party to organize but super memorable for your little ones. Today I’m sharing my tips, and links to some Amazon products that can help you pull it off. Links contain affiliates, all opinions are my own.

how to host a successful Christmas cookie decorating party

I have switched things up slightly over the years but the formula for our annual Christmas cookie decorating party is always pretty similar. We usually have anywhere from six to ten girls in total gather around our long dining room table. I set up a little station for each attendee complete with royal icing and festive sprinkles.

You don’t need fancy supplies for this low-key Christmas gathering. They’re kids! We use paper plates and plastic knives. Sometimes I use inexpensive disposable piping bags for the frosting, sometimes I just use plastic Ziploc baggies that I snip a corner off of.

in a nutshell: cookie decorating party tips

Prep Your Space

I always like to roll out some butcher paper over a table cloth for easy clean up after wards. That way, I can also write all the guest’s names at their spots. However, a disposable plastic tablecloth also works great.

Give Guests Individual Supplies

I’ve learned over the years that it’s best for kids to have their own sprinkles. Placing a small amount in individual containers (cupcake liners work great) means a lot less waste and a lot less mess. It’s also nice for kids to have their own frosting too, especially since kids like to stick the piping bags in their mouths. Yuck.

Keep It Simple

Each kid does not need to go home with a dozen cookies that have been decorated with 12 frosting colors. Three or four cookies per guest, and two or three colors of frosting is plenty for kids to have fun and be creative.
