I love the holiday season but it always seems to go by too quickly. And then Christmas break seems to be over before you can say “bah humbug!” At least, as an adult. However, even if it seems to fly by for us parents, kids still seem to resort to “I’m BORED, what should I DO?” all too quickly. Well, no worries. Whether you’re looking for something to keep your kiddos busy during Christmas Break, or you’re looking for a new family holiday tradition, I’ve got you covered. Today I’ve asked some of my most creative blogging friends to share their favorite December activities with kids. I can’t wait to share all their great ideas with you!

Special Christmastime family traditions.

5 great December activities your kids will love

I hope you love these ideas as much as I do! From historical traditions, to fun activities, there are so many great December activities to do with kids. I’d also love to hear from you in the comments at the end of this post–what’s your favorite Christmas time family activity?

celebrate the start of December with Saint Nick’s Day

One of our favorite ways to kick off December is by celebrating Saint Nick’s Day. We celebrate December 6th and it’s such a fun way to start the December activities with kids! There are lots of different traditions surrounding this European holiday, but our family opts of putting our slippers out by our fireplace. You can read all about our Saint Nick’s Day traditions in this blog post.

have a service-filled December with a “service Santa”

I love this idea from Alia at Party Like a Cherry and plan to incorporate it this holiday season!

“On the first day of December (or you know, some time during the first week if we miss the first day), we put everyone’s name in a jar and pick names. Of course if you pick your own name you put it back and pick a new one. And it’s just like “secret Santa” but we call it “service Santa” because the emphasis is less on buying the person a present or presents, but doing little acts of service for them (in secret) all month long. On Christmas Eve we all reveal who we had and have a good laugh reminiscing on our attempted sneakiness.”

tour some Christmas lights as a family this holiday season

Who doesn’t love looking at Christmas lights? It’s such a fun and simple tradition and I love how Porsha from Porsha Carr Blog works it into her December activities with kids.

“My family’s favorite December winter break activity is the Christmas light walk. We choose a night where it’s not super cold and then we will go to a street typically downtown and we will walk through and look at all the Christmas lights and the decor on the houses, it’s so much fun. We always bring hot cocoa with us in a tumbler and we just walk and talk and laugh. It’s such a fun, fun activity. Plus, it’s cheap and it’s free, lol.”

have a sleigh building competition and race–no snow required

We often forget that kids don’t need fancy–they just like fun! That’s why I love this simple idea from Adree at The Keele Deal.

“One of our family’s favorite things to do over Christmas break is candy bar sleigh races. We pick favorite candy bars and decorate them with candy cane sleigh runners, a driver and other treats. After the decorating is done we have fun racing our sleighs. This is a fun activity for a Christmas party or as part of a Christmas movie night.”

have a holiday movie marathon with your family

When in doubt, turn on a Christmas movie–or two. We love curling up in front of our fireplace and watching movies during the month of December. It’s one of our favorite low-key December activities with kids and perfect to do during the break! I also like to have special one-on-one wrapping sessions with my kids where we pick a movie and wrap presents together. You can find some of our favorite holiday movies in this blog post!
